Kuching.. My first..

It is my first time visiting Kuching. I pour in a lot of research work because I am bringing along 2 kids and 2 elders. It has to be fun for the young ones and comfortable for the elder ones. Though the trip has its odd moments, but I'd still think it was memorable enough.

For those of you who'd like to plan a Kuching trip with family, you may like to consider my itinerary:

Day 1:

  • Arrival
  • Hire a car
  • To Chinatown for local Koay Chiap and Seafood Porridge (Low Ya Keng)
  • Check-in to Damai Beach Resort
  • Walk around and dinner in Damai Beach Resort

Day 2:

  • Visit Cultural Village (Get discounted entrance tickets from the resort's agent)
  • Drove to Buntal Village for seafood dinner (10-20 minutes drive from the resort)

Day 3:

  • Took a half day cruise on-board at the resort's beach for dolphins and crocodiles watching (there were 3 types of dolphins in the area). The animals are too fast for our cameras.
  • Check-out from Damai Beach Resort
  • Back to urban city and check-in to Grand Margherita Hotel
  • Venture to Hui Sing Hawker Centre (hailed to be best local hawker fare - also recommended by Axian)

Day 4:

  • Lepak in hotel
  • Lunch at Song Kheng Hai Food Court (another recommended hawker food point by bloggers)
  • Casual walk around town
  • Embarked on Sarawak River Cruise for a beautiful sundown view
Day 5:

  • 30-45 minutes drive to Fairy Cave and Wind Cave (Reminder: Prepared with torchlight and proper walking gears)
  • In-between - Lunch at Pekan Bau
  • Went to Top Spot Food Court for Seafood Dinner (Reasonable Price)

Day 6:

  • Mini shopping stop (30 minutes)
  • Kuching Airport back to reality
Interesting local produce to bring home:

  • Pepper
  • Sarawak batik
  • Manik or beadworks
  • Woodworks
  • Bamboo/Rattan woven produce
  • Kek Lapis (Layered cake)
  • Tebaloi (Sago cookies)
  • Ikan masin terubok (Salted fish) - very smelly.. suggest buy last, if you must.

Dos:

  • Bring along rain coat for kids
  • Bring along flip-flops and shorts for cruise at beach resort
  • Sunscreen (I was browned on one side because I sit on the left side of the boat)
  • Book river cruise earlier to get discount
  • Wear proper walking gear if planning to go to the caves (Bring along torch light and drinking water too)

Don'ts:

  • If you are driving on your own, don't follow instruction from Google Maps blindly. The Fairy Cave Point in the Google Maps is a flat land out of nowhere. Ask around..

Verdict:
We will definitely come back again.. But maybe when the kids are slightly bigger.
